RCSI Bahrain promotes direct and mutually beneficial interaction between the university and community which is essential for the development and application of knowledge and the shaping of our future citizens. It is with this in mind that Ms Danah A Smith, a Lecturer in Nursing at the campus had an innovative idea and decided to embark on a community involvement project: Life a 24,000 piece Jigsaw Puzzle. With the encouragement of Ms Marian Noone, Director- RCSI Hospital Projects Board, the puzzle will be framed and donated to the new King Hamad General Hospital.

The number of pieces of this giant-sized jigsaw puzzle is the worlds largest. I cant describe my excitement about this community outreach project. I am certain that this piece of art will have a great impact on the psychological wellbeing of children at the pediatric wing in KHG Hospital. I know, because I have worked on a similar smaller 3000 piece project for a pediatric diabetes clinic that fascinates and calms children and their families during their visits. The great response and the enthusiasm shown by the number of applicants who signed for the project, reflects team spirit among the RCSI staff and students. As well as the KHGH commissioning team. I would really like to thank, and applaud all those who were, and will be involved in producing this magnificent and inspiring piece of work. said Danah

Four teams of students and staff at RCSI Bahrain will work from 10am till 6pm in a designated area of the Sports Recreation Centre to construct the 14 feet long (4.28 m by 1.57m) puzzle.

RCSI Bahrains aim is to build ongoing, permanent relationships for the benefit of the community. This is achieved through the collaboration of students and staff, working together towards a common goal.

PAL AWARDS

The transition from school to university can be daunting, particularly when having to study in a
second or third language. RCSI Bahrain understands that our students may need assistance from time to time in coping with the changes in their academic life; for example from campus to clinical practice or from student to graduate. Sometimes students may encounter emotional and stressful periods during their studies.

To assist with developing skills to enhance academic performance and success, the Student Welfare Office runs regular academic study skills workshops for both the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing & Midwifery, as a platform for personal and professional development. The Student Welfare Office also offers students a confidential counselling service.

In addition, the School of Medicines students may join the universitys PAL (Peer Assisted Learning) Programme, which is managed by the Student Welfare Office. PAL is a student-to-student support scheme. Volunteer students are trained as PAL tutors to facilitate the learning of students in lower years, with academic input from professors.

For new medical students, especially those arriving from overseas, the Buddy Programme is run for students by students and makes joining the university a welcoming experience. The programme is extremely beneficial in enhancing students knowledge and skills, as well as building confidence and self-esteem through interaction with their peers. Students who participate in the PAL Programme are able to discuss module topics with their PAL tutor and ask questions within a comfortable and friendly environment.

Another method of support is mentoring. All RCSI Bahrain students are assigned a mentor, who is either an academic or someone holding a senior administration position within the university. The mentor is responsible for guiding students on academic issues and study strategy. The Student Welfare Office is in charge of the Mentoring Programme and matching students to mentors. During orientation, small groups of new students are assigned a buddy. The buddy guides new students around the university, advises on practical issues and recommends interesting places to see and things to do while settling down to university life in Bahrain.

PROFESSOR DAVID MURPHY GUEST SPEAKER AT RCSI BAHRAIN

David Murphy obtained his first degree (BSc in Biological Sciences with First Class Honours in Molecular Biology) from the University of Edinburgh in 1979. Following a year working as a research technician at New York University Medical Center, he returned to the UK to pursue a PhD in Tumour Virology at Imperial College, which was awarded in 1985. It was as a Postdoc with Brigid Hogan at the MRC National Institute for Medical Research in London that the focus of Murphys research switched to neuroendocrinology, particularly the use of transgenic models to study vasopressin and oxytocin gene expression and function. After a brief stint at the Royal Veterinary College in London, this work was transferred to the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology at the National University of Singapore in 1988. Combining innovative molecular techniques, such as transgenic rat production, with physiological analysis, Murphys group was highly productive.

This effort contributed greatly to the development of the biomedical sciences and biotechnology in Singapore, both of which are now thriving. The award of a Wellcome Trust Programme Grant (at the time the largest ever awarded) brought Murphy to the University of Bristol in 1996, where he is now Professor of Experimental Medicine. Murphys recent research has utilized gene identification and transfer techniques to study the neuronal regulation of homeostasis in health and disease. Interests have focused on hypothalamic and brainstem neurons involved in the maintenance of cardiovascular and osmotic homeostasis. Current strategies involve the use of transcriptomic and proteomic methodologies to identify genes expressed in hypothalamic and brainstem neurons, and genes which alter their pattern of expression following physiological or pathological challenges (eg hypertension), and the use of cell-specific and inducible gene transfer methodologies in the mouse and rat (somatic and germline) to study the role of selected genes in the physiological regulation of hypothalamic and brainstem functioning in health and disease. Murphy has published over 150 papers and presently holds over 2 million in grant income.

Since opening the centre in 2006, over 6000 people have been recorded seeking help. Currently there are between 100-200 new cases per month seen at the centre. This is part due to the growing awareness of both the centre and the reduction in the stigma surrounding domestic violence.
Education is the key, and knowing that there is a support mechanism in place is crucial for the community. The statistics are not just related to expatriate community but the local community, who have are breaking down the barriers about domestic violence.

The workshops are interactive; drawing on experience from the attendee and other participants.

Words seem inadequate to express the sadness we feel at the loss of Naila Al Zayani. She was a dynamic member of the nursing team who will be greatly missed, both as a friend, colleague, mentor and teacher. Naila had a generous and sharing attitude and a remarkable sense of responsibility. She was a strong woman, she guided and cared for students and was there when we started the school, facing numerous challenges and happy times. Our deep condolences are extended to her husband and two small children as well as her family

RCSI BAHRAIN WOMAN'S TEAM BASKETBALL WIN

The RCSI womens basketball team routed NYIT last night in the first game of the Bahrain Basketball Association Inaugural Womens League 43-16. The women were lead by Julia Fox. Julia filled the stat line by scoring 12 points on 5/9 shooting, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block and 2 steals. About the only thing that failed Julia was her free throw shooting; at the line she was an appalling 2/7. Julia returned to the action late in the game after twisting her ankle early in the 2nd half. The other force in the game was Noor Nabhan on the outside. Noor had 9 points and 4 rebounds but what elevated the team was her defense on NYITs most prolific scorer, #8 Fatima Abduljabar. Noor held Fatima to a measly 6 points while also securing 6 steals, most of which resulted in fast break points for RCSI. The other defensive stalwart was Rita Bsaibes who was assigned NYITs inside presence, #15 Kamleh Raad. Rita also held Kamleh to 6 points while scoring 8 points herself.

Within the first few minutes of the game Coach Zaied said that he could see a marked difference in the tempo, mentality and aggressiveness of the women. He accounted this to the experience they gained from their trip to Beirut where they played some of the finest collegiate womens teams in the region. The transformation is pretty evident from the competition level [in Beirut] that the women faced with the level of competition in Bahrain. It is obvious that they are more secure and confident in their abilities and the system in which they play. Because of the trip the women have come back with better team chemistry. They are able to communicate and read each others movements on the court and are truly working as one cohesive unit, attacking both offensively and defensively!
The womens next game is against unknown Bahrain University which was in attendance scouting last nights game, so the womens team will need to be firing on all cylinders in order to control this game. The game tips off at approximately 2pm or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the NYIT v Al Ahlia University game which starts at 12:30pm at the Zain Basketball Arena in Um Al Hassam.

Saint Patricks Day (annual feast day which celebrates Saint Patrick: circa AD 385-461), is celebrated worldwide by those of Irish descent and increasingly by people of other ethnicities. Celebrations are generally themed around all things Irish and, by association, the colour green.

In keeping with that tradition, RCSI Bahrain saw the campus fountain go green for the day. The obelisk fountain designed by MSCEB (Mohamed Salahuddin Consulting Engineering Bureau, MSCEB), is located at the entrance of the campus and highlighted the fact that RCSI Bahrain draws from the history of the two cultures, which is incorporated, and seen on the motifs that adorn the fountains obelisk.
Guests included the Honorary Consul of Ireland, Mr Abdulla Buhindi, members and guests from the Bahrain Irish Society, campus staff and students.

The university enjoyed light refreshments and green cupcakes to celebrate. It was a great opportunity to socialise and celebrate St Patricks Day in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

RINGS OF CHANGE

Most University academics are required to have a PhD which is a specialist training in an area of expertise. In my case I have a PhD in Ornithology and Environment from Trinity College Dublin. An academics career depends on the pursuit of research in his or her specialist area and the publication of findings from that research. We use the expression Publish or Perish to indicate the importance of this.

While in Ireland I conducted research on the conservation of the endangered grey partridge. This work was funded by Bord na Mona, Cement Roadstone Holdngs, the National Wildlife Service and latterly by the European Commission. The outcome of the research was the implementation of a National Conservation Strategy for this Grey Partridge, a project that is still running successfully today. The number of birds remaining in the population has gone from 21 to 250 birds in the wild.
Transferring this expertise to Bahrain has been difficult. There is no culture of R&D funding (Research and Development) and awareness of environmental issues is poor. No Research Institutes providing grants for environmental studies exist here and the corporate conscience which is well established in Europe is non-existent in the Gulf States. Even international companies operating in the Middle East seldom have an environmental brief.

Since coming to Bahrain I have adopted the same approach as that used in Ireland. I have fostered close collaboration with Government agencies especially the Commission for the Marine and Wildlife, I have been appointed the Chairman of the Bahrain Natural History Society and am promoting environmental awareness. I have also obtained permission to use the ringing scheme of the British Trust for Ornithology here in Bahrain and I have trained the first local bird ringer in the Middle East. To date we have ringed over 5,500 birds of 130 species. We have a project on the breeding Terns of Al Jarrim Islands which holds internationally important numbers of Lesser-crested, Bridled and White-cheeked terns and are hoping to secure funding for a postgraduate student to conduct a research project there.
All expatriates (including everybody in the audience) bring expertise to Bahrain. Apart from teaching and administration in RCSI, I brought expertise in Ornithology and the Environment and through my contacts locally and internationally I am striving to leave a legacy in this field for the future of Bahrain.

Reflection is one of the most important elements of service-learning. It is experiences that can help people handle situations or events better when they arise in the future. (Dewey 1933)

Reflective thinking involves looking for commonalities, differences, and interrelations beyond the superficial. The goal at RCSI is to develop critical thinking skills in all our students; skills that will remain with them throughout their professional careers.

BAHRAINIS INCREASINGLY USING COMPLIMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE TO TREAT DIABETES

A rise in popularity of complimentary and alternative medicines (CAMs) to treat Bahrainis suffering from diabetes and its complications was identified today at The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland - Medical University of Bahrains (RCSI Bahrain) Research Day.

A study carried out by Abeer Khalaf, a 4th year student of the college showed that the prevalence of CAM use among the 402 participants suffering from either Type I or Type II diabetes was 62.7% (252/402). A minority of patients, 18.3%, used CAM solely to manage their diabetes, whilst 45.6% used CAM for managing both their diabetes and for other reasons. The study also showed that most CAM users were more likely to be women, to have had diabetes for a longer period of time or to have complications with their diabetes.

Diabetes is a condition caused when the body is unable to produce or use insulin to process the glucose (sugar) in the blood properly and so the levels of glucose in the blood is too high for good health. Glucose comes from foods containing carbohydrates, such as pasta, bread, potatoes and rice. When eaten, the carbohydrates are digested and converted into glucose that is carried in the blood. Insulin then converts the glucose into energy.

Kevin OMalley, President of RCSI Bahrain said, Diabetes has become one of the most common public health problems not only in Bahrain but the region. Twenty percent of the GCC population suffers from diabetes and another seventy percent is at risk of developing it. Obesity, lack of physical activity, alteration in eating habits and a change in social conditions have all played a role in the changing prevalence of diabetes in this country.

Diabetes can lead to debilitating or life-threatening conditions such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and even amputations. Prevention is better than cure and it is imperative that we place emphasis on educating not only those already suffering from the condition but also future generations on the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

GCC MEDICAL SECTOR FACES SHORTAGE OF NURSING SKILLS

The GCC regions healthcare sector growth prospects could be impacted by a shortage of nursing skills, according to the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, one of the worlds leading international medical schools.

The regions healthcare sector is growing rapidly but this growth could be affected by the lack of trained nurses from national populations, said Kevin OMalley, President of the, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland - Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain). Governments are successfully implementing strategies to invest in and develop their national medical infrastructure to serve the regions growing population, as well as a means of attracting foreign investment. However, the success of these strategies in delivering qualified nationals to practice medicine will be challenged as long as the region faces a shortage of nursing skills. The importance of nursing for the healthcare sector is often over-looked but without a constant supply of qualified nursing personnel to support patient care and the work of healthcare teams, the potential growth rate of the sector will be held back.

Organisations like RCSI are helping to tackle the shortage of nursing professionals in the region by opening up institutions across the Middle East. RCSI currently has a post graduate facility in Dubai Health City which has 130 students enrolled on two masters programmes. They also opened a new state-of-the-art campus in Bahrain early this year.

Batool Al-Mohandis, Head of School for Nursing & Midwifery, RCSI Bahrain, added, From our own experience, we have seen rapid growth in the numbers of students attending our teaching institutions in the region, but, growth rates in student admissions from national populations for nursing have not been matched by those for surgery, radiology, dentistry, pharmacy and physiotherapy. Based on the latest research, Dubai has an average of 29.1 nurses per 10,000 of population. In comparison, countries such as Norway and Finland have 100 nurses per 10,000 of population. To ensure the sector can meet the needs of Dubai and the GCCs as a whole, both from an economic and a patient care perspective, more nationals need to study nursing as a career..

RCSIs views come as the regions healthcare industry continues to expand at a rapid pace, driven by the investments being made by governments to create private markets of healthcare provision as they move from being providers of healthcare to regulators. The healthcare market in Dubai alone is set to grow by 14% over the next five years, with $2 billion being spent on overseas healthcare services every year. The growth of the market place is being driven by population growth, with regional states having witnessed tenfold increases in populations since the 1970s. The GCCs population is currently around 40 million and this is estimated to double by 2025. Additional factors such as the growth of healthcare tourism in the region and healthcare being used a means of attracting foreign investment are also contributing to the growth of the regional market

RCSI has operated within the Middle East for more than 25 years and currently provides medical expertise on a contractual basis to health ministries in Bahrain, the UAE, Kuwait, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. RCSI has been offering courses in Healthcare Management, Basic Surgical Training and running surgical postgraduate examinations in Bahrain at the Medical University of Bahrain since 2004. In response to the shortage of nursing skills in Bahrain, RCSI established a school of Nursing & Midwifery in 2006. In Kuwait RCSI is currently running postgraduate courses and examinations in Dentistry and Radiology. While in Jordan the College has been running courses and examinations in Dentistry and Surgery for over ten years.

As part of its strategy to meet the growing needs of Bahrains healthcare market, RCSI Bahrain has partnered with Tamkeen, Bahrains labour fund, which currently provides funding for 60 nursing places per year.

It also offers students from the Middle East a learning environment in which they will practice as healthcare professionals. The university now has 540 students, all studying for either general medical qualifications or nursing degrees. Approximately 40 per cent of the student class studying to be doctors are Bahraini and another 40 per cent are from Gulf regions. The remaining 20 per cent of students are from Canada and a diverse number of countries around the world.

The President of RCSI-Bahrain, Professor Kevin OMalley, commented, In a short four years since RCSI-Bahrains establishment in Bahrain, our student numbers have risen from just 27 in 2004 to nearly 550 now and are made up of over 30 different nationalities. Our medical student intake is now 120 per year. The new $65 million campus offers a state-of-the-art learning facility for medical and nursing students from the region. RCSI-Bahrain offers a fantastic opportunity for prospective medical students to receive a world class medical education from some of the worlds best medical professionals in one of the worlds newest medical teaching facilities. Todays opening is the culmination of a strong partnership the RCSI has developed with the government of Bahrain and we hope to take this partnership from strength to strength as Bahrain develops as a regional and global centre of excellence for medical education and training.

As a medical university, RCSI-Bahrain will work closely with Bahrains Ministry of Health hospitals and the Bahrain Defence Force Royal Medical Services Hospital, enabling students to develop their skills further in a real life medical environment. In addition, a new hospital being built alongside the campus, the King Hamad General Hospital, will be a teaching hospital for the university once it opens next year.

Medical graduates of RCSI-Bahrain are awarded degrees in Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and the Bachelor of the Art of Obstetrics (MB, BCh, BAO). In addition, they will also receive Licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

The Medical School has been accredited by the GCC Medical Schools Deans Committee and is included in the World Health Organization, Directory of Medical Schools.

Healthcare is fundamental to the future success of Bahrain and the GCC. The economic strategies that foresee GCC states diversifying their economies away from hydrocarbon revenues to more knowledge driven economies requires the foundation of a healthy population. With the healthcare market in Dubai alone set to grow by 14% in the next 5 years, medical teaching facilities such as RCSI-Bahrain are important elements in ensuring the continued growth of the medical sector in Bahrain and the GCC, concluded Kevin OMalley.
