Biography
Professor Docherty studied nursing at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, in the college founded by Rebecca Strong, a protege of Florence Nightingale, qualifying in 1979. After 3 years as staff nurse, he achieved a Higher Education Diploma in Nursing at London University. As a charge nurse in ICU, he graduated as a Master of Nursing from Glasgow University in 1987, then studied teaching at Jordanhill College and became a Nurse Tutor in 1988. Doctoral studies focused on the use of multimedia as a method of helping mentors assess student nurses and he graduated with a PhD from Glasgow University in 2002.
Since 1988 Professor Docherty has been an educator, and research interests have paralleled innovative developments in education. Latterly in Glasgow Caledonian as a senior lecturer for Practice Based Learning, he redesigned a simulation laboratory around a workflow based on an innovative educational paradigm. In 2008 he was appointed to be Director of Clinical Simulation, RCSI Bahrain, and more recently in 2010, to the role of Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery. During his time in Bahrain he has established a training centre for advanced clinical simulators, in partnership with Gaumard Scientific.
As recent past chair of the British Computer Society (BCS) Health Informatics Scotland specialist group Professor Docherty recently helped establish a branch of BCS in Bahrain. He was instrumental in Glasgow Caledonian University being awarded membership of the International Medical Informatics Association, and was a committee member of the Association of Common European Nursing Diagnoses, Interventions and Outcomes (ACENDIO), based in Geneva. In 2006 he received an award from the Jordanian Nursing Council for his contribution to the development of nursing in Jordan, through projects with the British Council to introduce liberal curricula in nursing in the Hashemite University; and through consultancy and teaching on a new PhD programme for nurses in Jordan University.
