Programme Details


 The programme is developed in the context of a modular framework; this means that students who continue to be in clinical practice, education, or management posts are able to access the programme. The programme is modelled on the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The programme offers six modules in the first year and 1 module and a dissertation in the second year. Each module consists of approximately 30 hours of lectures and tutorials. There are learning outcomes for each module and each module has its own assessment approach with the student accumulating credits as they progress through the various modules.

Year 1 Semester 1

Indicative Content

Professional and Clinical Leadership

Theories of Management and  Leadership; Professional and Clinical Leadership in Nursing; Leadership and Strategic Planning in Nursing; Organisations and Systems; Nurses as Change Agents; Decision Making.

Education and Training in Practice

Continuing Professional Development; Learning Needs Assessment; Principles of Curriculum Reform; Teaching Colleagues and Patients; Learning Assessment and Evaluation; Linking Theory to  practice.                                          

Contemporary Issues in Nursing

 The evolving role of the Nurse, Scope of Practice: Clinical Nurse Specialists, Advanced Nurse Practitioners; Nurse/Midwife.  Prescribing: Review and Critique of Nursing in the Gulf Region.

 Year 1 Semester 2

 Indicative Content

Health Care and Society

Discourses in Healthcare: Models of Healthcare Delivery:
Evidence Based Healthcare Epidemiology; Philosophy and Social
Theory:  Knowledge and Power. Socio-Historical and Political
Influences Informing Healthcare.   

Advanced Research Methods 1

Research Paradigms; Research Methods and Approaches;
Developing a Research Question; Data Collection and Analysis;
Research Ethics; Research Proposals 

Practice Based Modules      Developing Student thinking through Reflective Practice; Explore
Questions and Answers which Prompt Reflection on Practice.  
Critically Analyse Practice Related issues using a Reflective Model. 

 Year 2   

 Indicative Content    

Advanced Research Methods 2   

Statistical Analysis; Qualitative Data Analysis; Workshops and
Tutorials on Developing Research Areas. Each student will prepare
a poster for presentation.

Research Dissertation  Each student will undertake a Research Dissertation of approximately 20,000 words on a related area to their own practice.
