| What are the differences between the 5 and 6 year medical programmes? |
The traditional medical programme is 6 years and comprising a Foundation Year followed by 5 Medical Years (roughly two and a half years of pre-clinical training and two and a half year of clinical training). Some students are exempt from the Foundation Year and do 5 Medical Years (i.e the 5 year programme). Other students are required to do the Foundation Year. Essentially there is one programme that is 6 years long and it is a question of where a student commences their studies, in the Foundation Year or in the 1st Medical year (know as Junior Cycle 1). Students are exempt from the Foundation Year based on the academic subjects and or grades they have achieved prior to admission. For information on this, please see the Academic Minimum Entry Requirements section of this site. |
| Can I choose to apply for the 6 or 5 year programme? | No, you apply for the 5/6 year medical programme. It is the Admission Committee that place students in the appropriate year for which they are deemed eligible. |
| When do classes commence ? | All programmes run in the normal academic calendar i.e. Sept/ Oct start dates running through to a May/ June end of year. |
| Can students attending the Medical Programme in Dublin transfer to the Programme in Bahrain and vis versa ? |
Student registered in the RCSI Dublin programme and Students registered in the RCSi Bahrain programme cannot transfer from one programme to the other. They can however spend one full Semester in an Exchange Programmme which allows them to study for one full Semester in the alternate RCSI branch (i.e. the RCSI student in Dublin can spend one Semester in Bahrain and vis versa). The exchange is made possible as a result of a) using the same curriculum in both Colleges and b) by running the programmes in parrell. The exchange programme offers students in both campuses a wonderful opportunity to experience life in another environment and culture. |
