RCSI Bahrain attends National Charter celebrations

The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland - Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) celebrated the 18th anniversary of Bahrain's National Charter by attending the Ministry of Education's carnival for Higher Education Institutions in Isa Town.

Speaking on the occasion, RCSI Bahrain President, Professor Sameer Otoom congratulated His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, His Royal Highness The Prime Minister, Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and First Deputy Prime Minister.

Professor Otoom praised the vision of His Majesty King Hamad and said that the Charter reflects the King's desire to develop and enhance Bahrain for its own people, particularly with regard to education.

In addition to RCSI Bahrain's participation at the carnival, the University's Mobile Diabetes Unit also took part in the Charter Day exhibition at the University of Bahrain.

Staff and students manned the RCSI Bahrain booth throughout the day and introduced visitors - including the Minister of Education -His Excellency Dr Majed bin Ali Al Noaimi - to the activities of the unit, which aims to educate primary school students about Type II diabetes.

The Mobile Unit was originally donated to the Bahrain Diabetes Society by the Rotary Club of Manama and a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by RCSI Bahrain in 2012 for an initial pilot project for a series of school visits and renewed in 2017.

The school visits are carried out by RCSI Bahrain nursing students and are aimed at educating children through a host of interactive games and activities.

Since its launch, more than 4,000 primary school students from government and private schools have taken part in the activities, which have now become part of RCSI Bahrain's nursing curriculum.
